HAS A CURE FOR GENITAL HERPES BEEN DISCOVERED?

In an electrifying bit of news on the struggle against herpes, one of the world’s top research companies just reported that it may be closing in on creating a vaccine for the HSV-2 virus that causes the STD. U.S. biotechnology manufacturer Agenus Inc. released conclusions from its continuing study in June indicating that its developmental product, HerpV, effectively prevented the appearance of genital herpes symptoms in men and women who participated. Even more impressively, the drug also seemed to inhibit the virus’ ability to implant itself in another host.

Why Does HerpV Work?

Without getting too far into complex biology, HerpV works by inducing an immune mechanism reaction that increases cells’ ability to recognize the herpes virus. This is done by introducing what is called a “heat shock protein”, or HSP, into the blood. Once in the body, the HSP attaches itself to the exterior of healthy cells, consequently forcing infected blood cells to become incompatible and incapable of attaching themselves (i.e., replicate).

By preventing the HSV-2 virus from replicating, HerpV fundamentally makes it unable to cause outbreaks in current sufferers and non-infectious to herpes-negative people. This is undoubtedly an exhilarating proposition for the estimated 16% of the human population currently struggling with genital herpes.

How Impressive Are Agenus’ Findings?

In what was referred to as a Phase 1 study, 100% of herpes-infected patients who were administered a HerpV injection exhibited a major increase in antigen-targeted cell immune mechanism response to the virus. In common terminology, this means that the T cells in every one of the study’s participants developed immunity to HSV-2 immediately after being administered HSP.

Dr. David Koelle, a medical professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, offered the conclusions for Agenus and made the following statement, “I believe these data represent the first finding of their kind in humans in genital herpes treatments.” The professor went on to say, “The potential use for a therapeutic vaccine candidate such as HerpV is in managing outbreaks and ultimately disease transmission in patients with genital herpes.”

Does This Mean That A Vaccine Is Just Around The Corner?

The ramifications of these preliminary findings on HerpV are tremendous. Dr. Koelle reinforced this point by stating, “Being able to impact and possibly decrease the spread of genital herpes would be a huge step in stemming this epidemic that affects one in six adults in the U.S.” With all of the excitement that this announcement generated, a logical question was “So, how close is the HerpV vaccine to being released to the public?”

While it may not be very far off, it is improbable that the vaccine will become available to present genital herpes patients at any time in the immediate future. Agenus is right now beginning Phase 2 of its study on the pharmaceutical’s efficiency and, as long as it continues to be successful, would then be required to submit to the FDA-approval program before releasing the vaccine. Considering that this process can sometimes take years, the effort to get rid of herpes symptoms in men and women may not be as close to its conclusion as we would like to believe.
