U of Florida Dr. Bloom

色々な大学や研究機関でHSVに関する研究が行われていますが、その中でも、University of Florida Medical SchoolのDr. Bloomの研究グループは非常に大きな注目を集めています。

特に、Bloom博士の研究は、抗HSV-1リボゾームを利用したものらしく（詳細についてはもう少し調べてみたいと思います・・・）、HSVウイルスの増殖ならびに再活性化を非常に効率よくブロックすることができるようです。

現在のところ、HSV-2に対する有効性の検証も行っているようで、今後も注目していきたいと思います。

まだ、研究室での実験段階ですが、別の記事によれば、「神経細胞内でおとなしくしているHSVウイルスも対象としている」ようで、今進行している研究・治験の中では、最も「完治」に近い研究ではないかと思います。

* もちろんこの「完治」というのも非常に微妙なものでして・・・、


読者の中には「HSVウイルスをすべて体の中から駆除したい」と希望する方も多いかと思いますが、現実的におそらく無理かと思われます…。そこで、現実的には「妥当なレベルの完治」を求めていくことになるのでしょうが・・・、落としどころとしては、おそらく、「再発・感染・再活性化しないレベルに押さえ込む」というところではないでしょうか・・・。

（これでもスゴイことだと思います！）

下の記事を見てみると、「研究が順調に進めば、4、5年後には市場に出すことができるかもしれない」と書いてありますので、是非期待したいところです！

Thank you for your email. Sorry for my delay in getting back to you but I have been traveling. The answers to your questions are below:

1. What progress has your team currently made in locating a cure for HSV?

I use the term "cure" carefully. I think eliminating HSV from the body is a very difficult goal. Our aim is to generate a more effective meams of suppressing the virus so that it will not reactivate and coause clinical disease. To that end we have recently demonstrated that our anti-HSV ribozymes are effective at blocking replication and reactivation of HSV-1 when applied topically.

2. Do you believe it is possible to not only cure HSV1 but also HSV2?

Yes. Based on our success with HSV-1 we are currently testing anti-HSV-2 ribozymes for their effectiveness at blocking HSV-2 reactivation.

3. What obstacles do you and your team face in conducting further research?

The toughest issue we face is obtaining funding for the remaining pre-clincal tests of our ribozymes. These tests are a pre-requisite for gaining approval to conduct human clinical trails.

4. By when do you believe a cure can be marketed?

If our current research is successful and goes as planned I would estimate it would be 4 - 5 years before a product would hit the market.
