A possible vaccine for genital herpes has reportedly shown promise during the first stage of drug trials.

The vaccine named HerpV was developed by Agenus Inc and is said to work by improving immune responses by utilising heat shock protein technology. These proteins are found within each cell in the body and they alert the immune system to the presence of diseased cells. Although heat shock protein therapy was initially designed to protect against genital herpes, the vaccine could also potentially be used as a treatment for HIV, HPV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and malaria.

During phase I trials, drugs are tested to see how safe they are and whether they are well tolerated by participants. Patients were given three treatments over the course of two weeks. Those who received the vaccine showed significant improvements in the production of immune cells to attack the herpes simplex viral cells. The vaccine was also well tolerated with minimal side effects, which most commonly were pain or discomfort at the site where the vaccine was injected.

Researchers believe that these signs are very promising and there are plans to enter phase II medical trials in 2012 and, if these are also successful, have the medication available by 2015.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and there is no cure or vaccine available, but thousands of people are able to live with the condition and are able to control or even prevent an outbreak with the help of anti-viral medications such as Famvir or Valtrex. Both treatments work by suppressing the herpes simplex virus to help the body deal with it more effectively.
